Keynote: Seven Habits of Highly Effective
People, Dr. Steven Covey, Covey Leadership Center
Review in January 1993 Chapter Newsletter:

Dr. Steven Covey at the November 19, 1992 Mile High DPMA dinner meeting,
flanked by board members Kim Malone and Daya Haddock. Approximately 375
people were entertained and challenged by Dr. Stephen Covey at the
November DPMA dinner meeting. Best known as the author of The Seven
Habits of Highly Effective People, Dr. Covey presented a two-hour
overview of his theory that values are best evident in behavior. Dr.
Covey explained that the key is to align values with principles. Values
are internal. Principles are external. Each of the seven habits is based
on an external principle. Dr. Covey began his discussion by examining
habits 4, 5 and 6, which can be grouped as habits of interdependence as
they relate an individual to others. Dr. Covey pointed out that until
individuals have "their act together" they cannot practice habits 4, 5
and 6. "You cannot talk yourself out of problems you behave yourself
into." The first three habits are the foundations, habits of
character. Dr. Covey offered several points related to the first three
habits:
- "Don't be efficient with people; be efficient with things."
- "No one on their deathbed ever wished they spent more time at
the office."
- "Make your lives extraordinary."
- "When men found the mirror, they began to lose their souls."
- "Common sense usually isn't common practice."
- "Don't ever try to shape up another person."
- "Be a light, not a judge."
- "If you only cultivate one habit, let it be 'Sharpen the Saw'
(the seventh). You automatically work on the others."
