Workshop: Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery
Planning by Sam Stahl, Consultant
Keynote: Bridging the Corporate Divide - Aligning IT With Business
Goals by Cedric G. Tyler, co- founder of Affinity
With technology's advances and pervasiveness in the corporate
environment, you would think there would now be a close, symbiotic
relationship between the IT leaders and the business leaders. Well,
you'd be wrong. In many organizations, alignment of IT and business
goals continues to be a challenge. Mr. Cedric Tyler, of BusinessGenetics,
makes a unique and compelling case for a new business modeling
methodology with a common language for communication. Internationally
respected as a leading expert in business, IT and e- commerce,
Mr. Tyler began his career in IT as an applied researcher at IBM's
"showcase" development facility, RESPOND, at North Harbour in the United
Kingdom. Here he started work on models and languages that help align
business operations and goals. Subsequently, he successfully launched
Infomet Pty Ltd. and, in South Africa, Infolab. Both of these companies
specializing in the business-to-information technology interface were
sold to IBM in the early 1990's. Retaining the rights to the business
modeling intellectual property he created, Mr. Tyler eventually found
himself in Colorado.
A pioneer in an innovative and practical approach to business process
and requirement engineering, Mr. Tyler co-founded a successful group of
technology and consulting businesses in the USA (BusinessGenetics in
1999, Affinity Solutions, Momentum Resourcing, xBML Innovations). Cedric
is the primary developer of the "break-through" businessGenetics xBML
technology, which is a synoptic language to describe business. |

HTML: In this introductory presentation of web
development basics, you will learn the different components of an HTML
page, basic link management, and how to include images, text of various
styles, and some backgrounds. Tips for validating syntax, constructing
browser independent pages, and where to go for more information will be
shared.
HTML will be taught by Charlie Oriez, an AITP member who is a web
developer for several non-profit organizations. In 1998 his efforts for
the Colorado Association of Non-Profit Organizations won the "Webbie
award" for Best Use of the Internet for Advocacy (Expert's Choice). When
not designing web sites, Charlie is an adjunct professor teaching web
site design and database courses at National American University and the
Devry Institute in Denver. To learn more about Charlie and his thirty
year career in Information Technology see

will relate the technology to web page and web site design and
maintenance. Participants will explore pre-authored, external, embedded,
and in-line style sheets. Advanced applications covered will include
replacing HTML tables and JavaScript-like roll-over effects.
Cascading Style Sheets will be taught by Jim Intriglia, an AITP
member who has his own consulting, e-business system, and software
application development firm. After twenty-three years in Information
Technology, Jim's focus today is on cutting-edge technology solutions.
He is an adjunct Computer Science faculty member at Arapaho Community
College, and previously taught Computer Information Sciences at Denver
Technical College. Now Jim is developing Internet- based educational
programs for client-companies. For more information about Jim's vast
experience see
www.JimIntriglia.com.

followed by a discussion of its advantages and disadvantages. After
learning when to use JavaScript (and when to choose something else),
practical, hands-on exercises will demonstrate the various elements of
JavaScript.
JavaScript will be taught by David Snyder, an accomplished graphics
and website designer and developer with a degree in Computer Graphics
from Purdue University. He understands visual appeal, ease of use, and
technical achievement and specializes in computer illustration,
programming, icon design, and page layout. Using his personal network he
has learned to seamlessly integrate Windows and Open Source operating
systems while exploring cutting edge techniques using JavaScript on the
client's web browser. For more detailed information about David and his
skill with JavaScript see his personal website at www.snydersweb.com. |

| September 6, 2002 |
Dear AITP member,
The start of the Mile High Chapter's 50th season is here, and we are
making changes based on this past summer's survey. 22% of the members
responded, and 3% responded from the dinners announcement list. Based on
member survey results of 86.7%, we moved the AITP dinner meetings to the
third Thursday of the month. 40% of members and 39% of non-members
surveyed liked the newly remodeled Executive Tower Inn location best, so
we moved back downtown for this coming program year. Member prices were
lowered as well to $27, and parking is free.
Plus we republished the website. Let us know how you like the new look
and feel at www.denveraitp.org Check out the new volunteer opportunities
section. Reflect on this month's security theme with Elaine Miller's
report from GigaWorld on Rudy Giuliani's presentation - see the News
section on the chapter website.

Past Presidents Night
Scholarship Presentations
|
Keynote address by Steve Wille, noted speaker & IT Leader, on the
subject of Abstract vs. Concrete Thinking
What happens when requirements and design are not understood before
they are signed? What happens when there is inadequate interaction among
developers and the business team? Some would call these situations
normal; others would see it as symptomatic of something bigger. The big
problem is we don't all think alike and this gets in the way of
effective communication. Steve Wille will suggest some simple rules for
creating multiple "translations" to solve the communications barriers
and speak a different language.
Steve is currently head of a software development team at Great West
Life. He has held senior IT management positions at Reliance Insurance,
Guaranty National Insurance, Cahners Publishing, and Diners Club/CitiGroup.
Prior to joining Great-West, Steve took a three year sabbatical to read,
write and teach the management side of software project management.
Workshops he co-authored are offered by Tough Teams, Systemation, and
TeamSkills Institute. Steve is a Colorado native, has a BSBA from the
University of Denver and an MBA from Regis University. He has
contributed work at
www.toughteams.com/papers.
In addition to the lively keynote presentation by Steve, we had
several other special features, all of which are traditional for our May
meeting:
- Honoring of our Past Presidents
- Presentation to the Harold M. Pool Scholarship winner
- Presentation of 2005/2006 Board Members

Remembering Charlie Oriez…
By Elaine Miller, Chapter
Liaison, Mile High Chapter, Denver
Charlie Oriez was passionate about AITP holding a
dual membership in the Mile High Chapter of Denver and the Southern
Colorado Chapter in Colorado Springs, the Sierra Club and the Democratic
Party. Charlie died on September 7, 2005 at age 52 after a four-plus
year battle with lung cancer caused by second hand smoke.
I have known Charlie since he joined the Mile High
Chapter in 1989 where he volunteered to serve as a member of our
Legislative Committee and was a contact for public relations which I was
responsible for as a V.P. and newsletter editor. It took until 1995 to
convince him to join the Board as our Student Chapter V.P. because of
his long-time involvement with the Sierra Club where he was founding
chair of the South Platte Regional Group.
Under his direction we developed our Chapter
website at
www.denveraitp.org in co-operation with the student chapter at
Colorado State University who originally donated the space on their
server. Two years later we moved to site our own domain and ISP and
Charlie became the first volunteer chapter webmaster. He was part of
the successful team to attend the AITP National meeting to bid on the
1998 National Meeting in Winter Park, Colorado and served on the
logistics committee for the meeting. He served as chapter President in
1999-2000. He was elected Region 4 Secretary in Winter Park in 1998 and
subsequently served as President in 2000-2001. He attended every
National Meeting of the Members since 1997.
Charlie was the architect
of the Dave Sanders/Columbine Memorial Scholarship which the Mile High
Chapter awards to a Columbine senior who is planning to major in I.T.
Charlie had no kids but Columbine High School was in his neighborhood
and he was passionate about remembering the only teacher who was killed
at Columbine, who was respected and loved by the kids, and who was
killed in the halls by the shooters because he was helping kids get out
of the building. Dave Sanders was the computer lab/technology
instructor for the school. This fund is self-perpetuating and
administered for the Mile High Chapter by the Foundation for
Information Technology Education. The annual
interest provides the amount of the scholarship. Charlie has been the
chairman of this committee since its inception including this year as
well.
He served as Chair of the National Legislative
Committee and set up the Yahoo Groups for that committee and for Region
4 to facilitate communication.
He regularly contributed articles to the
Information Executive on privacy and stopping spam.
He was awarded his Individual Performance Award at
the Gold level by the Mile High Chapter in 2003.
Professionally, Charlie was a systems engineer,
most recently with Ciber, Inc., and taught at the Denver campuses of
DeVry and National American University. He held a Bachelor of Science
in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor
of Arts in Political Science from the State University of New York. He
received his Master of Science in CIS in 2002 from the University of
Denver.
In 2004, Charlie was awarded the Susan E. Miller
Award for outstanding contributions to the environment by the national
Sierra Club. He was a long-time activist in the Colorado Sierra Club,
serving at various times as vice chair of the state organization,
Colorado representative to the National Council and chair of several
state committees. The website he designed for the Sierra Club won a
“Webby Award” in 1998 from the Colorado Association of Non Profit
Organizations for best use of the Internet for advocacy (expert’s choice
category).
Charlie had an innate understanding of
communication skills, mentoring and the motivating fellow members and
friends to accomplish more than they realized they could. He had an
incredible sense of humor and joy in living that taught all of us how to
value life and friends. When he was diagnosed with cancer in 2001, he
scheduled his wake a month later so that he would be there to share it
with us. He was a man who lived well, was well loved and will be
remembered well and missed greatly.
Tax-deductible memorial donations in Charlie’s name
may be made to the Dave Sanders / Columbine Scholarship on the
Scholarship page of this web site.
A memorial fund has been
established to benefit the South Platte Group of the Sierra Club in
Charlie's name. Tax-deductible checks, made payable to the Sierra Club
Foundation, may be mailed to Mike Mueller, Treasurer, 6700 South Glencoe
Street #208, Centennial, CO 80122.

there are worse things going on - as it relates to letting private
information out.

Keynote: Redefining the IT Professional, Deborah Lovell, President On Your Market “There will be a broader demand for people who are versatile in a
variety of different areas than those who are continuous specialists in
only one area. I believe that this trend will gradually raise the bar
for IT workers: It may, in fact, even turn them into business IT
professionals instead of just technical folks.” Dianne Morello, Research
Vice President, Gartner
Source: John Edwards, Technology Writer, “Rise of
the Machines - By 2010, will technology have terminated most IT
jobs?”, CIO Magazine Dec 15, 2003 Issue
The role of the IT professional has changed from technical specialist
to business manager focusing on innovations that matter for the
business. The IT Pro must recognize that information technology (IT) has
become far more than a means of automating existing processes and
increasing productivity. Rather, as a prime stimulus for business
innovation and an enabler of competitive advantage—and must position
themselves as key participants in a process that develops business and
IT strategies in concert.
The redefining the IT professional from IT Pro to IT Biz Pro brings a
need to enhance our business skills and steer our careers down the right
path of the new IT industry – to become the next generation of IT
leaders.
Deborah Lovell is owner of On Your Market, a Marketing Consulting
Group, and prior to launching her own company in 2004, she was the
Business Development Manager for Tamer Partners Corporation, a corporate
training company, where she launched leadership and team building
programs for enhancing employee performance. Her expertise includes 25
years experience in relationship management, sales & sales management,
and business channel development in the telecommunications and
information technology industries. In addition to serving as President
of AITP Dallas, she serves as Vice President of AITP Region 3. Deborah
also serves as Director - Dallas District of the American Teleservices
Association - South Central Chapter, and is a member of Call Center

interactive techniques and games.

security software purchases.

years, Stevens has given dozens of presentations regarding ROI, and is a

"The Strategic Role
of Product
Management"
presented by Barbara Nelson, Instructor, Pragmatic Marketing.
Product management is often ill-defined and misunderstood in
typical technology companies. Yet the role can be one that
propels the company to the next level of performance. Rather
than running the business like a hobby, effective product
managers focus on the business aspects of defining and
delivering products to market. Barbara Nelson will explore the
strategic role of product management using the Pragmatic
Marketing Framework. The session will also include action
items for reviewing and assessing the product management
role at your company.
With more than 20 years of experience in the software
industry, and having launched several products following the
Pragmatic Marketing Framework, Barbara Nelson is an
evangelist of market-driven products. As an instructor for more
than 7 years, Barbara teaches many of Pragmatic Marketing's

Keynote: "HD
Digital Transition: Are You Ready?"
- Jim Schoedler, JB Schoedler Associates, Technology Consultant
On February 17, 2009, federal law requires that all full-power
television broadcast stations stop broadcasting in analog and broadcast
only in digital. The ranks of those who believe it won't happen, that
Congress or the FCC will somehow push back the date, are much smaller
now that there's less than a year to go. In this talk we'll focus on the
inevitability of the change and its impact on individuals, businesses,
and the general culture. What should you do to prepare? Find out on
Thursday, March 20.
Jim specializes in digital television and the
convergence of IT and traditional broadcast engineering. He was formerly
CTO for Rocky Mountain PBS, responsible for a network of four television
stations across Colorado. Prior to that Mr. Schoedler was Senior Project
Director for National TeleConsultants in Glendale, California where his
clients included DIRECTV, Fox Television Network, Warner Brothers and
Walt Disney Feature Animation. Mr. Schoedler holds a MS Degree in
Systems Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a BS in
Electronic Physics from La Salle College. He is the current chair of the
Denver Chapter of the Society of Broadcast Engineers, is a Game Day
Frequency Coordinator for the NFL Broncos, and will be involved in
communications coordination for the Democratic National Convention in
August 2008. |
