How to fix the Verisign DNS problem

    Overview

On September 15, Verisign began to inaccurately report invalid domain names as valid. It then presents its sitefinder search engine page, written in English, instead of a 404 page written in the local language of the reader.

You can fix this problem on your own computer.  Every operating system has a hosts file.  To back out sitefinder and present your intended default 404 page, modify that file by placing the following line at the end of it:

    127.0.0.1 sitefinder.verisign.com

The file is in different places depending on your operating system.  For most operating systems, it is not necessary to reboot for the change to take effect.

    Linux

    /etc/hosts

    Windows 2000/XP

    C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

    Windows 98/95

    C:\Windows\hosts.sam

save as hosts without the sam extension.  Make sure that windows didn't insist on saving the file as hosts.txt. Rename it if it did. Reboot for the change to take effect.
